Mirak looked to the sky. In the distance could be seen one of the cities of this world. Stretched out from the city tendrils of refugees moved towards the the protecting wall. Mirak smelt the air and knew that the time is coming the would storm the positions of the imperial gaurd outside the city and push them back. Then once the were trapped inside the armies of the Gods would choke the life from them. The was another prize down there as well. the Sarosians were here. He wonder if they had kept a chronicle of the Kurathi's betrayl during the Gothic Sector War. They had spilt Sarosian blood to seal their pact. Then the gods saw fit to embrace them in the Warp for Centuries until now. Now they were brought back to Fight again For the Gods. Looking around he could see his brothers preparing themselves for the fight. They had the looted vehicles of twenty PDF and guard regiments with them. They had the cult fanatics they had recruited on worlds they had conquered. They Will descend from the hills and Raise the banner of Chaos above the Command Bunker. And in the confusion they would slip in fanatics and psykers in the ranks of refugees and send them in through the gates. Tomorrow the Chaos would begin, Tonight the Screams of the captured would sing the Kurathi to sleep.

Roiling clouds swam lazily over head, through the murk of smoke and fog flittering shapes could just be seen along the outlying ridges.

Kin'ala grunted as he spat wiping his chin on his sleeve. Damned fools, wasn't good enough that they had turned from the emperor's light and stabbed their erstwhile brethren in the back, now they had to come seemingly out of nowhere and twist the knife deeper in.

Somewhere out there the Kurathi 17th were massing under the banner of that swine Mirak, that much the Sarosian knew, gak it all if it wasn't a pleasant surprise though. The regiment had been aching for payback ever since that Gothic sector debacle. No one stabbed a Sarosian in the back and got away with it, much less an entire regiment.

Calmly he let lose a round from his bolt pistol, the round tearing off into the darkness and rewarding him with a sastisfying gurgle as somewhere deep in the smoke and haze a traitor met the buisness end of his bullet.

"Praise the Emperor and pass the amunition." he chuckled quietly to himself.

"Escobar whats the situation on the ridge?" his mic clicking as he depressed the earbead.

"Sir multiple hostiles sighted, mearda if their aren't more than we estimated too." came the reply.

Spitting again Kin'ala turned back down the lip of the command trench and made his way to the forward spotting posts. The seemingly endless corridors and dugout walkways blending into one after so long. The walls were coated in soot and dirt evidence of hundreds of different engagements, the scorch marks from las guns and minor explosives still evident amongst the more numerous autostubber and heavy bolter impacts.

"Look alive boys!" shouted one of the forward observers as Kin'ala crested the steps into the observation post. He looked around noting the masses of tangled surveyor comms and the bunched up wires crammed haphazordly into the corners that connected everything. Escobar came jogging up to him his helmet tied into the strap of his lasgun which itself swung lazily off one shoulder. He gave his Kin'ala a toothy grin displaying the defined yet rugged look the Sarosians were so well known for.

"Sir the fekkers are swarming all over the outerlying ridges, theirs so many that even a half arsed pot shot takes out atleast two. Its as if they have no care for any of their own."

Kin'ala grinned, "Seems like you answered your own curiosity.

"They don't care at all about who gets shot, so long as someone bleeds. Now Hows it looking from a tactical standpoint?"

Even without having asked he could see that although the enemy were clearly massing for an attack, the sheer volume of men they were committing to the ridges that dominated the towns outerlying landscape was insane. An attack of that number would only server to bog themselves down which left the quiestion; where was the real attack to be?

"Point taken sir, but if anything I'd say this was more a diversion than a focused assault, their sheer numbers will choke them back before they have a chance to reach our line. Its almost as if they want their men die. To think that these men were once the Kurathi." The last words were almost spat out the name of their arch nemesis dark enough on its own to issue a foul taste in his comrades mouth.

"You truly are the sharpest tool in the shed Escobar, and thats saying something since we all prefer sharp instruments." Kin'ala grinned the men around them laughing.

"If I had to guess then I'd say that that, fekker Mirak is gonna be throwing his real Kurathi at us more towards the gate."

The realisation of this dawned on Escobar even as the words finished leaving his mouth.

"Maerda, they're gonna try for a Tulama again sir!"

Kin'ala nodded, it figured sometimes the same trick worked twice on the same dog, and Mirak was that much of a fekker to try it twice in a row.

Kin'ala looked at the ridge once more, imaged of the day the Kurathi traitored running rampant in his mind, the local pdf convoy trailing smoke towards their lines, the look of shock on his men's faces when they saw what had become of their previously believed lost allies come spilling forth from the smoking wrecks parked amongst them. They had come in waves, adorned in the tattered remenants of the pdf that they had butchered to use as a disguise, it had been a slaughter, only fought off by bare bravado and a sheer rage at the insult to their once friendship.

"I'll be damned if it works twice Escobar, I was snipers on the gate towers and heavy weapons teams trained down the entire length of that fekking road."

Escobar grinned and nodded.

"Sir!" he said with a sharp salute, with that he turned on his heels and raced off to deliver the orders and set up the defences.

Bring it on you Kurathi mearda, this time you won't find us waiting with open arms he thought as he turned and made his way to the gate as well.

They were falling upon the Guard positions like and avalanche from the hills. He was in the thick of it Leading from the front just as they had taught him at the Schola progneium. He had been a commissar once now he was more. A trooper next to him jerked back stitched by heavy bolter fire. He could feel the dwindling spirit of the Kurathi.

"Forward For Chaos! The Blood God thirsts for Sarosian blood!" exclaimed Mirak as he losed a bolt from his gun into a squad of Kurathi taking one of the men square in the back.

Across the Field he could See the "Colonel" Kirill's Chimera leading what they could of a Mechanized assault. Kirill that upstart had claimed leadership of the Kurathi after Lianvis had taken an overheating plasma pistol and an Ork slugga round to his throat.

"These are my men Kirill and I will see you dead the gods willing." growled Mirak as he gutted one of the refugees still caught outside.

Looking up to the battlements he could see the tell tale signs of snipers and Heavy weapons strafing his men in Pdf garb. he had to stop this now before their plan fell apart.

"Sargent Yuri! If you and your grenadiers would care to join us please Assault that wall." Mirak said into his micro bead as a las round hit him in the shoulder.
His vision swam a moment and then it all went red. The Kurathi were undivided really but everyone had their god and Mirak screamed his lords name as he drew his sword and charged the Imperial Lines.

Yuri looked down at the battlefield from his position. When Mirak had gave him the go ahead he and his men Came out of the sky on Vera. The Valkyrie falling towards the walls like an eagle about to hit its prey. In its belly the men strapped on their explosives. Yuri These men were the toughest most suicidal in the regiment. They knew jumping out of a Valkyrie going this fast was suicide but then again The had the gods on their side.

One problem here guys you are both talking about the SAME battle. You EACH have to set up an Apoc battle!
As we discussed; I don't care if one leads into the other but they have to be 2 stories that can stand apart (being able to blend them together should be in addition to meeting the criteria).

Remember they get judged AGAINST each other. Not as one.

Kill: your story does meet the 750 word minimum. It also does talk in terms of an Apoc battle.
However you only mention the Enemy forces in terms of Apoc size. by keeping the story focused on only a few of your units it gives the feel that you only have a small to standard sized force going against them. Something in your description of the other army didn't quite gel, but I can't place my finger on it.

Nick: Unfortunately, with your contribution being divided to wrap around Kills entry neither section meets the requirements. (I am also unsure if they meet the 750 minimum combined. I haven't finished counting yet)

As for combining the 2 pieces they do not flow. Now, placing a mental pause in the story so it can transition to the other story is fine, However if you do that you MUST also make sure YOUR story line is uninterrupted and flows smoothly with or without the other story dividing it.

Also you have to think in BIGGER terms. Instead of a unit in a Valkyrie, think Valkyrie Assault Squadrons, flying in under cover of the disorientation of an orbital bombardment or bombing runs & fighter wings.
Front lines being smashed by multiple amour & artillery companies. That sort of scale.

I've extended the deadline at the request of a few last minute entries. So one (or both if you want) can go ahead tweak it a bit & resubmit.

Ok Mittion i hope this is better. It is 840 words

The ashes were falling all around them. The burning husks of the tanks and soldiers alike littered the field. In front of them stood the last bastion of hope the imperials had on this continent. Space Marines, Guardsmen, Frateris Militia, and Sororitas hugged the walls and make shift barricades. It was in there, the beacon of light in their darkest hour. Around the Abbey of Undying Faith the forces of chaos surged like a massive ocean. Mighty Towers blessed by the Grandfather, Baying hounds of Khorne ran through the army snapping at whomever they wished eager for the hunt to begin. Traitor Marine and daemon, Beast and Man stood side by side waiting for the signal.

Upon the battlements Imperials could hear the screams of sacrifices in the hundreds crying out in an unnerving melody. And then it stepped forward out of the army. Holding itself up on a staff its withered form oozing with the power of the warp, its two heads cocked to either side Kairos raised one of his talons towards the Abbey unleashing a Cry that sparked the Horde into action. Traitor guards surged forwards While Hell Talons and Valkyries flew towards the temple. Defensive weapons opened up howling with the prayers to Him on Terra. Hidden Baneblades and fired into the massive press of bodies killing hundreds with every shell. Hydras gunned down scores of enemy aircraft. The invaders finally made it to the wall and were gunned down by las and bolter fire. The Priests from the temple took up a prayer and those who heard it were inspired. The resolution twice what it was the cut a bloody tally. Yet even they new soon their supplies would run low the horde out there could fight indefinitely it seemed. The Sisters and guardsmen would need to rest. It looked grim for the space marines could hold alone if needed but for how long.

Running towards the Abbey Kirill looked up and rejoiced today it would die. It would feel the touch of chaos and this sector would be enlightened as he and his men had during the Gothic Sector war.
“Daes call an bombardment on that section of the wall were the Val Kyrie crashed.” Spat Kirill pointing towards a massive crack opened by the fanatic efforts of a crazed pilot.

Daes nodded and talked into his vox seconds later shells fell out of the sky at the wall. Most hit into the horde but that was okay as a few slammed the wall making the crack wider. Kirill turned to yell at Daes but Daes was no longer there entirely just his lower half the rest was vaporized a few seconds earlier by a las cannon shot. Running now towards one of the many tanks the Kurathi had liberated from the Imperials. Kirill clambered up on the side and banged on the hatch. The tank commander opened the hatch up and stared at the Colonel.
“What the hell do you want?” spat the tanker
“I want you to ram this piece of zark at that crack in the wall.”
“Zark you” replied the tanker
Smiling Kirill shot the man in the face with his plasma pistol. Dragging the body out of the hatch he jumped into the turret crew staring at him.
“Well if no one else wants to voice why we shouldn’t follow the colonel order drive this thing at that wall. NOW!”
Snapping back to the war the crew fired what they could the driver gunning his machine towards the wall. Kirill sat back in the chair and looked outside through the auspex. The Abbey was looming closer and his grin got bigger. The defenders were firing at them now but the armor held and the tank rammed the wall. Defenders on the wall screamed as the floor beneath their feet gave way. Tons of rockcrete and metal landed on top of the fool hardy tank. For just a few moments the battle seemed to have stopped raging both sides waiting for the cloud of dust to settle. As it did a bloody figure stood on top of the debris. Kirill laughed, and then Let out a cry of Triumph he had breached the wall. Both sides reacted as quickly as they could trying to take the breach. Firing at the defenders Kirill laughed and laughed until he felt something beside him. He turned staring, basking in the radiant light that the figure was giving off. Bringing his gun around to fire Kirill shouted in defiance at the figure. He was rewarded as a gauntleted fist slammed into his mouth and out of the back of his head. It turned now away from the dead heretic. Its guardians falling into place behind it. Then they began to sing a Battle hymnal and marched towards the enemy bringing righteous death with them.

From the back of the Chaos horde a light could be seen standing in the breach. They all knew what it was. The thing they had come to kill. The Saint

Alright looks like I have to work on rewriting it tomorrow or w/e but Mitten, I posted it into a word counter program and copied the amount of words that are in the story in the parenthesis at the bottom. The story is well over yet healthily under the word requirement.

I'll go ahead and read nicks then write an appropriate apocalypse story, I figured they wanted what was happening prior to the beginning of a battle but now that i see what you mean I can go ahead and just write out the story itself as if it was in the middle. Should be able to do it in a night.
